This image is not intended to rewrite history (ahem, “The Greatest Showman.”) This isn’t a a rosy-colored lens that looks back at the movement for women’s suffrage and shows these women working together hand in hand, negating the history of racism and prioritization of white women’s needs above women of color.
There’s no question that white women had to fight a for the right to vote 100 years ago. Hard. But they did so without intersecting, often while pushing down, ignoring, or disparaging women of color. This image is meant to show my love and admiration for each of these suffragettes, in her own right. All of whom deserve equal acclaim and admiration. All deserving of the title “sister suffragette.”
The women’s suffrage movement is a story of courageous women and bold courage. It’s also the story of forgotten heroes (primarily women of color), racist exclusion and white supremacy. It is our history as women. And by owning it. ALL of it—the bravery and the cowardice, the victories and the failures—and recognizing all of it as our own, we can learn from it. We can understand better how it impacts our world as women and as feminists. And we can intersect with those stories with compassion and love.
Pictured are the following suffragettes:
Ida B. Wells: This abolitionist, journalist, civil rights leader, and suffragette. When the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) demanded that she not march on President Woodrow’s Inauguration Day (because many white Southern women refused to march with a black suffragette), she refused the order, waiting until NAWSA had passed and joining the march. Ida went on to found the NAACP.
Amelia Bloomer:One of the very few prominent white suffragettes who was extremely vocal in her opposition to the siloing of black suffragettes and the lack of intersectionality within the movement, Amelia worked alongside better-known names like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (she actually introduced the two women) in her efforts to advance the rights of all women—not just white women. Amelia became the first woman to own and run a newspaper. She also created the controversial women’s clothing—the bloomer!
Felisa Rincón de Gautier: This Latinx hero, who led the women’s suffrage movement in Puerto Rico (and was one of the first Puerto Rican women to vote in 1929), was also the first woman to be elected mayor of a capital city in the Americas. Felisa was also one of the organizers of the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico, which advocated for self-government and whose slogan was “Pan, Tierra, y Libertad” (Land, bread, and liberty). Her legacy is still a rallying cry for activists in Puerto Rico who continue to fight for either statehood or decolonization, as well as many Latinx individuals in the United States whose votes and voices are consistently suppressed.
Iroquois Clan Mother: These “keepers of culture” in the matrilineal Iroquois clans, both inspired and heavily influenced the strategy of early suffragettes. The equitable society of the Iroquois, where women participated at all levels of decision making, inspired the women’s suffrage movement—all without credit. Historian Sally Roesch Wagner says, “They [early suffragettes] believed women’s liberation was possible because they knew liberated women, women who possessed rights beyond their wildest imagination: Haudenosaunee women.”

Fourth Wave’s t shirts run very true to size (scroll through the photos above to see real women and men wearing Fourth Wave). The blank apparel industry is filled with cheap babydoll shirts, and I’m not interested in selling you any of those. Take a look at our sizing chart (just scroll through the photos above), and order the right size for you. I absolutely love the styles I offer here. They’ve been carefully curated for their softness, fit, quality, and style. I’m also proud to offer sizes XS-4XL on almost every item in my shop. Inclusive sizing matters, and all bodies are beautiful.
I use high-quality, butter-soft, no-shrink, triple-stitched, true-to-size apparel. I take ethical sourcing and ethical production very seriously. The wholesaler I work with is a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), which upholds rigorous standards for sustainability, sourcing, and ethical work conditions. As well as the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and the Quality Certification Alliance (QCA).
I use eco-friendly, water-based ink that does not emit toxic fumes while curing. It’s so safe you can eat it (YUM). The ink feels soft when dry and literally becomes part of the t-shirt.
Please also note: White water-based ink is NOT 100% opaque on all t-shirt colors. This vintage look is 90-95% opaque--and beautiful.
Everything you see here is made by hand, by me, with real ink and real screens. I personally believe in the messages I create, and you’d better believe I’m wearing my own shirts out into the world as I work to make it a better place for all of us. Keep in mind that all orders are made on-demand (I don't keep a massive stock of shirts in all designs/colors/sizes because that would be WHOA). Creating your shirt on demand helps me keep costs as low as possible and gives you lots of options in size, color, design, and style.
Seeing your photos on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest warms my feminist husk of a heart. Whether you're marching, protesting, or having brunch with your BFF, I love to see women and men! of all shapes, sizes, ages, and colors wearing Fourth Wave feminist apparel. Tag your photo with #FourthWaveApparel find me on Facebook (Fourth Wave Apparel), Instagram (@FourthWaveApparel), and Pinterest (Fourth Wave)!
We offer free shipping on everything in our shop!
If you don't see the style/design combo you want, never fear! I make all of my products in house, so the sky’s the limit. I don’t list all design options for every single shirt, so you don't have to scroll for 8 years, but if you love a particular style of shirt but want a different design, just let me know in your order notes.
If you’re interested in placing an order of 20+ shirts, please reach out! I’m happy to answer all your questions and can provide quick turnaround and a fantastic, quality shirt for your event or party.
I want this to be your new favorite t shirt. That means, if you’re not happy with it, please reach out before leaving me a nastygram in your review. I’m not perfect--despite my best efforts, a little blob of ink escapes without my notice. But I’m always happy to make it right. On a similar note, if you LOVE your shirt, please do leave me a review--it means the world to me to know that you are wearing your feminist shirt with pride while you make positive change in the world.
Returns/exchanges accepted on all except sale items and custom requests.
